Review by Dianne Harrison : So you may pay a little more for the life time maps, but it;s worth it! Worked great out of the box. Be prepared, it took 4 hrs to upload the new maps, but hoping next update doesn’t take that long. Its easy to work and quick to respond. One of the best buys I’ve made recently. My sister has the 13?? Garmin with the 4.7 screen. The 5 screen does make a difference and now she wishes she had gotten the one I have. Pay a little more for a bigger screen, you’ll be amazed at the difference!

Review By TravellerTrish : This was a Christmas gift for my husband who has long been thinking about getting a GPS. I did a lot of research, talking to staff at stores and reading online reviews. I chose this model because of the 5″ screen and lane assist features, both of which have proved valuable for him. In fact, he loves it. He prefers it to an installed system because we have multiple vehicles plus he travels a lot and rents cars and loves the portability. He also enjoys using the phone thru unit functions. We live in a giant metropolitan area and the reprogramming feature works great when freeways are clogged due to whatever problems. We’re not crazy about the special offers from area merchant feature…more annoying than helpful. About the only thing on the wish list? Having the unit “learn” our preferred routes when they differ from the program, which I guess goes along with the function choice to avoid traffic. It doesn’t work as well as we’d like. But that’s a minor quibble compared to the helpful features and he is more than satisfied.

The only problem is that my Verizon cell phone is three years old and isn’t completely compatible with the Garmin 1490LMT.

The sales pitches don’t bother me as they only appear sometimes when starting up and shuting down the unit.
